Music Statement of Intent

At St Peter’s we believe that all children are entitled to a music curriculum that inspires creativity and lets them communicate together in a universal language. Our aim is to ensure we deliver a high-quality music curriculum that not only challenges but also instils a life-long appreciation and enjoyment of music. Musical learning has profound benefits for children in terms of their wellbeing, academic achievement, and social and emotional development. As the children progress at St Peter’s, they will learn how music has been shaped by culture and historical changes, whilst listening and appraising the works of great composers/musicians during each unit of work.

The Primary National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review, and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced, and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, and appropriate musical notations.

In EYFS, children develop their understanding of music through the areas of Communication and Language, Physical Development and Expressive Art and Design. The EYFS framework states that:

‘The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts.’
