“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
Nelson Mandela
“With languages, you can move from one social situation to another. With languages, you are at home anywhere.”
Edmund de Waal
Languages Statement of Intent
We intend to inspire our pupils to develop a love of languages and expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. We aim to help children grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners by providing them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies as well as the means to access international opportunities for travel, study and work later in life.
At St Peter’s, the children have the opportunity to learn a modern foreign language as part of the school curriculum. They learn French from Year 3 through to Year 6 in line with the National Curriculum. Embracing a modern foreign language in a child’s early years facilitates the learning of other languages later in life - the earlier a child is exposed to a modern foreign language, the faster the language in question is acquired.
