Art Statement of Intent

We believe that the teaching and learning of Art and Design ignites, inspires and develops children’s creativity. A high-quality Art and Design curriculum gives children the opportunity to express themselves through other mediums whilst also equipping them with the skills to explore, experiment and create their own pieces of artwork. Children are encouraged to evaluate their own and others work and explore the work of famous artists. As children progress, they will also develop their understanding of how art has been influenced by cultural and historical changes.

The Primary National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

In EYFS children develop their understanding of Art and Design through the areas of Physical Development and Expressive Arts and Design. The statutory EYFS framework states that:

‘The development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity. It is important that children have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials.’
